Graphics Interchange Format = g.i.f. A trick to remember pronunciation is to think that Graphics sounds like Goat. (Not "j" like in giraffe or jump) Invented in 1987 Create TWO gifs. You should take two videos for this assignment. Weebly does not allow GIFs on their free version. EMAIL ME your two GIFs 15 points Due Thursday, Jan 5th |
Advice for making a good GIF: - keep motion short and simple - keep camera still - try to find a blank background - good lighting (daytime outside or by a window is best) |

Design tool: "Proximity"
|
|
Proximity
Our brains are trained to read text or images that are placed together as relating to each other. Related text should be grouped together to create a relationship between them. In the U.S., our brains are trained to read left to right, this instinct will be our first reaction to seeing text. You can see how this can work against graphic design in the "bad" examples below. Even though some designers tried to make text that is meant to be read up to down, our instinct is to read it left to right. It is better to work with the brain when designing advertisements. |
Sometimes it is easier to see why Proximity is important in design by looking at examples that have BAD proximity.
Because of the placement, font choice, or color these text designs are hard to read.
Bad Graphic Design because of bad Proximity:
Because of the placement, font choice, or color these text designs are hard to read.
Bad Graphic Design because of bad Proximity:
Good Examples:
In this example, different fonts and colors are used to clearly separate the different groups of information.
The player's stats are grouped together with the green highlight; the title of the article "top 5 under 25" is clearly separated by the green circle design and placed far away from the player's info. |
In this example, all the actors names are clustered together; the title is large so it is easy to see first; information about the movie production is in small font clustered together.
Font color is used to create separation, which influences how the viewer reads the text. |
infographic
Create an Infographic about an issue or topic of your choice.
Use a mix of images, font, and a cohesive color scheme to make the information easy to read. Use Proximity to make your information easy to read and understand. Make your file 800x1000 px. Must be original work overall, do not use a template. You may use images from google to add to your design. Must show at least 10 facts or areas of information. Must put sources in your image (do not put the whole link, ex: NOT: https://www.theceramicshop.com/content/987/Kiln-FAQ/ Use instead: (The Ceramic Shop) Upload to Weebly 40 points Due Thursday, Jan 12th |
Notice how these examples use font, color, and Proximity to make the information easy to follow.
Look how different groups of information are separated by color backgrounds.
