QUARTER ONE:
Observation
MAJOR PROJECT, ALL ASSIGNMENTS, AND REFLECTION WORKSHEET
DUE before the end of the quarter
Required prompt: Self Portrait
Your self portrait can be in any illustrative medium (not photography).
It must be figurative but it does not necessarily have to be realism in style. You can do any art style that you want. Must have face details that look like you. You must use a reference picture or a mirror. Must be at least 12x18". If you are not confident in drawing, use the grid method. |

Quarter 1.Practice Project 1: Five Still Lifes
For 5 class periods, create an observational still life. Use a bright light source. You must set up the same scene every time but draw with a different medium (oil pastel, graphite, charcoal, chalk pastel, pen, colored pencil, etc.)
Draw for the whole class period. Allow yourself to "flow". Do not stress over creating a "finished" picture. Just draw. Try to accomplish some shading. 20 points |
Q1.P2: Artist Diversity Research #1
Pick an artist from the Explore Artists page.
You should look at multiple sources, not just the classroom website, to answer the questions below.
Write the artist's name and the art movements they are associated with.
Answer these questions in FULL sentences.
1. Describe the art overall this artist is known for. Describe it as if I cannot see it. Nothing is too obvious. Include the medium(s). Use any art vocabulary that you know (Principles of Design, etc.). Describe the style.
2. Analyze what emotions or concepts could be behind the work. Was the artist trying to communicate something at the time it was made or perhaps how do people interpret the artwork with new meaning now? Was there any important historical event that influenced the artist (ex: WWI, Great Depression, civil rights activism, etc.) or anything in their personal history (trauma, race, military duty, disability, etc.)? What does the artist say they were inspired by or the meaning of their own work?
3. Describe what you appreciate or like about their art. What do you find interesting about the person and their work?
Do not copy sentences from the Explore Artists page or another website, use your own words.
Should write at least 200 words. Use complete sentences.

One must be exterior (outside of a building/nature) and one must be interior (inside). Draw for the whole class period. Use a viewfinder (or your fingers making a rectangle) to help you find a good composition. Again, do not worry about creating a "finished" realistic picture. Try to accomplish shading. 20 points |

Find a clean circle to trace. Trace that onto the drawing paper and on your source image. If you are going to use pencil to sketch first, use a hard lead (like 4H) and draw very lightly. Graphite can smear into lighter colors. Match your source image and paint the missing piece. Use acrylic paint. When dry, carefully cut out your shape. 25 points |

Q2.P2: Notan
The Japanese art of Notan is the balanced design of black verses white. The idea is that what exists in white, also exists inversely in black. It can be seen as a metaphor for 'there cannot be light without dark'. This is the exact idea that is expressed by the Yin Yang symbol.
Talk to me before you start this project. You can use any medium (cut paper works well for this). 20 points |

QUARTER THREE:
Expression
MAJOR PROJECTS, ALL ASSIGNMENTS, AND REFLECTION WORKSHEET
DUE
REQUIRED PROMPT: Triptych
Create three artworks that are connected by a theme and meant to be displayed together (this is called a Triptych).
Triptychs were very popular in Medieval and Renaissance art. The style and medium are up to you. Your triptych must be of an object that you care about. Your composition can look however you want. Ex: different angles of that object, different scenes holding/using that object, that object done in three different styles, that object in three different phases (food being eaten, makeup being applied, etc.). Part of the project is deciding the finishing touches of how to the artwork will be displayed together (in what order, framed, etc.). If you choose photography, you must print and matte the photographs. |
Q3.P1: Personification Creature
Illustrate a character or creature that is a personification of an emotion, phobia, or mental state.
Toby Allen, Shawn Cross, and Disney's Inside Out are excellent artist examples. Your creature must take up most of a 9x12" paper. If it is not finished in color, there must be an aesthetic reason, run that by me. Think about how shapes, textures, and colors communicate emotion and cultural meaning. Overall the creature must be figurative but of course surrealism is allowed. 25 points |
