- Get supplies out right away
- Food is not allowed, drinks with lids - Have a community studio mindset, help each other put away supplies, help keep supplies organized - Sign projects and clean bottoms - Close glaze lids tight - Wash table at the end of class - Wash glaze brushes and return them to clay station - Never pour slip into sinks |
RECOMMEND
- Wash your hands at the end of class and apply lotion
- Spritz your project with water and wrap in plastic - Don't handle other students' projects, including when trying to find your own in storage - Don't be afraid of the pottery wheel - Make extra projects in free time - Be patient with yourself and approach the course like learning a new physical skill |
Semester Grading overview
2 Pottery Wheel days
(1 per quarter) - 40 points Graded on participation, do not have to produce anything. Must clean the wheel after using. 4 Kiln Tech days (2 per quarter) - 60 points Kiln tech duties: - Keep clay area organized and picked up - Make sure no clay supplies are left in the sinks - Help with kiln loading/unloading - Wrap up all clay at end of class Extra Kiln Tech and Pottery Wheel days = 2 points extra credit per day |
15 points per week - entered on Friday
5 pts - Task: work ethic, time management, and following classroom expectations 5 pts - Project: skill progression, fulfilling assignment expectations 5 pts - Studio: studio cleanliness and overall class participation, if table is left dirty/supplies out, whole table will lose points. Extra points can be earned for free-time projects. |

Sketch first.
Roll out a slab to be consistent for thickness. Expectations: At least 7 clay pieces - must be figurative Hanging structure your choice (dowel, stick, hoop, etc.) The mobile pieces go together with a theme ("unity"). Must have detail carving on both sides (we will be glazing both sides) Glaze after bisque. Assemble as a sculpture. |

Recreate a famous artwork as a dimensional tile.
Convert the 2D painting into a 3D tile. Carve the painting title and year on the back of your tile. |
