Besides painting on canvas, Moholy worked with collages on paper. He produced linoleum and woodcut prints, and sculptures of wood, glass, and metal. Moholy felt there was no barrier between fine art and commercial art. Died: 1946 Main Medium: Photography, Graphic Design About the Artist: Moholy-Nagy was born in a small farming town in southern Hungary. He left for Budapest in 1913 to study law, but his studies were interrupted when he enlisted into the Austro-Hungarian Army in 1915. He experienced the horror of war, which remained with him for the rest of his life. During this time as a soldier, he discovered a passion for drawing. Moholy-Nagy was appointed a teacher at the Bauhaus in 1923, Germany’s most famous design school. He set up a studio in Berlin and did advertising, exhibitions, stage designs and costumes. He published images in magazines and books all over Europe. In 1939 he was able to open his own art school in Chicago. It became a department of the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1949 and continues today. |
