About the Artists:
Frances and her older sister Margaret enrolled at Glasgow School of Art (GSA) and took drawing classes.
By 1894 the Macdonald sisters had left GSA and established a studio where they made (often collaboratively) metalwork, embroideries, jewellery and craft items.
Frances taught at both Liverpool and Glasgow schools of art.
Although today they are all but unknown, the Glasgow school of which they were a part, was an important circle of modern Scottish artists.
About the Artwork:
They had a distinctive style influenced by mysticism, symbolism and Celtic imagery. The delicacy, femininity, strength and, above all, the originality of their style was partly responsible for one of European modernism’s most enchanting movements, Art Nouveau.
Immediately following the 1896 opening of their Glasgow studio, they transformed broad ideas such as "Time" and "Summer" into highly stylized human forms in their paintings.
